A Peek Inside My Smoothie
There are so many deliciously tempting smoothie recipes out there. Just take a look at Pinterest or Instagram and you are bombarded with an array of flavor concoctions that makes you think of your favorite ice cream shop (think chocolate salted caramel, strawberry shortcake, chocolate peanut butter cup, mango passionfruit and so on). Don’t get me wrong, I love trying new smoothies out on occasion, but day after day I keep coming back to the same smoothie because I appreciate both the health benefits and the flavor. I wanted to break down for you what’s inside of my smoothie and why.
By now you have likely heard the popular formula for creating a satiating, blood sugar regulating, fiber-filled meal. That formula is P+HF+F, which translates to protein + healthy fat + fiber. I also like to throw in a V for vegetable for good measure and as a reminder to eat your veggies…even though the veg can fall under the fiber category. Here’s the breakdown of my smoothie in terms of this formula:
P: plant based protein powder (my current obsession is Sprout Living Sunflower Seed protein powder)
HF: flaxseed meal
F: flaxseed meal (pulling double duty as my healthy fat and fiber source)
V: frozen cauliflower (also a fiber source)
Extras and superfoods:
Frozen bananas for extra creaminess and potassium for workout recovery (also a fiber source)
Wild blueberries- an antioxidant powerhouse thanks to the flavonoid anthocyanin that protects against aging and disease; also an excellent source of fiber
Hawaiian Spirulina – the super-est (that’s a word, right?) of superfoods. This blue-green algae is PACKED with nutrients making it one of the most nutrient dense foods out there. Just 1 tablespoon supplies 4g of protein, 11% of the RDA for iron, also B vitamins, magnesium, calcium… convinced yet? Spirulina is a complete protein (similar to eggs) and contains all of the essential amino acids that we need. Now what does it do? It is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, improves blood lipid levels, may control blood sugar levels and my favorite- is a powerful detoxifier aiding the liver in flushing out toxins including heavy metals (critical for warding off viruses). My favorite is the Hawaiian spirulina linked here on my products page.
I mix all of this with unsweetened almond milk.
